After saying “yes,” setting the wedding date and selecting the venue, the next big to-do is picking your wedding colors. For some brides, this is easy. They’ve dreamt of this for years. For others, it’s a little more difficult – there are so many options! And with each season, theme and style, there is a spectrum of color from which to choose. But with a little thought and consideration, picking a wedding color can actually be a fun, exciting and incredibly helpful decision.

Colors set the tone for the event. It speaks to the mood and the atmosphere without saying a word. If you have no idea where to start, think about colors you don’t like and take them off the table. Not a fan of brown? Gone. Always despised chartreuse? No worries. By whittling down what you don’t like, you’re allowing yourself to think more about what you do.

Keep three things in mind when thinking about the location: the season, the setting and the sensation. Are you getting married in the South Carolina Lowcountry in the middle of summer? Dark red might not set the right tone, but a pale blue or blush could be more appropriate. Are you planning an intimate winter ceremony at a resort in Asheville? Then a dark plum or forest green could strike the right balance between cozy and elegant.

Seek out creative wedding resources for inspiration. There’s nothing wrong with seeing what other couples have done for their weddings in similar locations to get a sense for what could work. It could also spark your creativity to find something new and different.

Consider your personalities as a couple. You want your wedding to be an authentic reflection of who you are and if you go with something just because you think it might look good, it won’t be as beautiful as it could be. Think about your likes and dislikes, hobbies and interests, and let that guide you, as well.

If you can’t settle on one color, choose two or three. These days, many couples opt for one or two main colors and several accent colors to outfit their wedding color palette. Consult a color wheel or seasoned designer to help you find the right combination. Select a main color and accent colors that complement, rather than overshadow.
